  • I am a free market capitalist all the way but what they were trying to pull and the timing was just wrong and will absolutely not create more compelling matchups; quite the opposite. Whenever these "super clubs" play now it is a big deal and the whole world is watching because it's in the Champions League and the stakes are always high and we may not see this matchup again for a few years. Now Inter Milan vs. Liverpool is just another Wednesday afternoon in the super league that neither can get relegated from. No thanks.

    • I know that MLS is improved but to say they are now on the same level is crazy. MLS needs a lot more European stars to come over before it's on the same level.

    • @Horacio Gomez - Like, yes, MLS has improved and this year presents the best opportunity for an MLS team to win the CCL, but for him to say or imply that Liga MX is overrated and that MLS is basically on their level is such a stupid comment that is completely out of step from reality.

  • European clubs are clubs, not companies. Many are owned by members or membership has a vote on who becomes president. It's not entertainment only over there. It's a religion. Playing against the minnows on a daily basis means everything for the little clubs. Just because it's the odd thing to say that you're for it, don't just take that side.

    C JC J20 天 前
    • Yep. The fact that Mosse said "younger fans are in support" of the ESL was lots predictable and wrong. Basically every fan is against the ESL and just because the pundits are saying the same thing doesn't mean the fans aren't saying the same. Also no one saying the Status Quo is fine and dandy. FIFA has it's own problems internally as well as UEFA.

  • While I don't like the MLS franchise system, at least the league (which has much more teams than the planned Super League) tries to manufacture parity amongst its members whether you like it or not. In addition, franchising because of the unique nature of the size of the country and shared history with other sports makes more sense here. The ESL does not try to create parity, merely a cash cow that they reckon will make just the specific members more money in perpetuity so they don't have to deal with their own bad financial decisions (I see you Barcelona) and the risk that they have bad seasons. It's a joke, given the hundred year plus historic context of clubs across the continent. I think Alexi either intentionally or unintentionally misses the key context in favor of a "hey we want the best and we want money!" argument. Heartening to see people all over the world, even the US that would stand to benefit in some ways, against the ESL.

    HansHans20 天 前
    • @King Wes44 Yeah and the fact that David Mosse brought up the fact that "younger fans" are in support of ESL is skewed. That's not actually true. Just because the pundits on other networks are saying the same thing doesn't mean the fans aren't. Basically every fan knows the ESL will destroy football. Joke podcast..

    • Yeah your right it works here because other sports have a similar structure so it's easy for Americans to get into. But this does not work elsewhere at all. You must have pro rel, but I do think FIFA and the Premier league and other leagues should be looking at a salary cap like our american leagues do. It creates parity and if your front office is truly good they will continue success if not a Leicester City could win again. It's just more fair that way then having a club like Man City who didn't win anything major in decades get bought and now be able to spend millions on great players even on the bench and mop up the league.

  • Why watch the MLS if all you are looking for is a better product?

    Michael WnekMichael Wnek20 天 前
    • Spot on. They watch it to support their local teams, for the rivalry, for the excitement. Football isn't a product to be consumed by fans. It's a passion and a way of life for a lot of people. The MLS model is fine for the US but it cannot ever work in Europe.

      Ian MooneyIan Mooney20 天 前
  • The concept of abandoning promotion and relegation goes against the entire principle of football. It removes the possibility of fairytale stories (e.g Leicester). The ESL clubs will have no motivation to invest the money back into their teams and will instead line their own pockets. It's no coincidence that the clubs involved are those with the biggest debt. You mention meritocracy and it's funny therefore that the likes of Spurs and Arsenal are involved, despite being nowhere close to the best teams in Europe. I'm a United fan, but I wouldn't be at all opposed to kicking all six of the English clubs out of the Premier League immediately.

    Ian MooneyIan Mooney21 天 前
    • I have to say I'm sorry as a American fan of this game for this IDIOT. He does not respect how football was created and how it was built to today. ESL will ruin football for everyone. I just hope that if this goes through FIFA and EPL makes changes on ownership similar to the German teams 50+1. And create a salary cap. Not all the good players will be in this league still thousands of good players to play in other leagues. EPL needs to promote themselves as REAL football by going back to the basics of what made it beautiful and great.
